Questions Concerning Gambling

Jack H. Kirby
Las Cruces, New Mexico

Brother Mateo E. Dawi, Sr. of the Philippines has sent me five questions concerning an article I wrote on "gambling." The article appeared in the October 4, 1979 issue of Truth Magazine (Vol. 23, Page 634). He requests that I answer through Truth Magazine and I am happy to do so. His questions and my answers follow:

Question One: We make a purchase at the grocery store.. The sales girl instructs us to remove a label, write our name on it, and drop it in a box for raffle purposes. Our name is drawn, and we win a prize of $1000. Is it a sin to accept the money?

Answer: No, it is not a sin to accept the money. For it to be considered gambling and sinful, we would have to purchase the raffle ticket. The label was not purchased for the purpose of the raffle, but the item it was pasted on was purchased (for food consumption). The label and raffle were incidental to the purchase, and not the reason thereof. As we pointed out in our article (page 635), "Gambling is not just taking a chance; gambling is a wager placed on a chance"

Are Gambling and the Lottery Sinful?

George C. Garrison

One morning several years ago a stranger called and said the man who owed me money, enough to support my family for a month, could not pay me. He had bet five hundred dollars on a horse race and lost. He had hoped to win and pay me off and have an equal amount for himself. The man who called was from Gamblers Anonymous. They suggested an agreement to pay it off, which never happened. We suffered the side effects of gambling. Proverbs 28:20 states, "A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished."

Gambling has been around since about 2000 B.C. In the United States Gamblers Anonymous is growing rapidly and in the state of Minnesota, it has grown from one chapter to 53 in a few years. This should cause Bible teachers to teach the truth on this subject as well as related subjects of the flesh. This would help cut down on the number of young people having difficulty in this area. The sad part is that some of God's children will be lost because of gambling.

The works of the flesh are enumerated in Gal. 5:19-21. Mentioned in this list are such things as fornication, lasciviousness, drunkenness, revellings and such like, of which the apostle says, “they who practice such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.” In 1 Cor. 6:9, 10, Paul again lists a similar list of immoral sins which he also says will cause a person not to inherit the Kingdom of God. In this list, he includes the sin of covetousness, along with the others such as mentioned before, fornication, adultery, drunkards, extortioners, etc.

The word “covetous” is defined by Webster as “inordinately desirous of gain, especially of money, greediness.” This is especially descriptive of one of the most prevalent sins of our time – that of gambling. Many people ask, “What is wrong with gambling? Where does the Bible condemn it? Well the answer to the first is – it is sinful; and to the second – it is condemned here in 1 Cor. 6:10 under the sin of covetous, or covetousness.

The Problem of Drink

Jack Kirby

Christians agree that drunkenness is sinful. Paul lists it as one of the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:21). Here it is clearly indicated that the impenitent drunkard "shall not inherit the kingdom of God." The same apostle also declares that a local congregation is not to extend to nor maintain its fellowship with a drunkard. "But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner: with such an one no not to eat" (1 Cor. 5:11). Therefore if, in facing the problem of the drinking of alcoholic beverages, the extent of it was drunkenness, then the solution is plainly set before us. There is more to the matter, however, than just drunkenness.

The Sin Of Social, Drinking

By Lewis Willis

I saw it five days before New Year’s Eve. I guess it appeared that early so that everyone’s vision and thinking were clear enough to consider the message. It was a full-page warning with large red and blue headlines that appeared in the public interest in the Akron Beacon Journal (12/27/84). The cost for the statement was underwritten by a large number of businesses and civic organizations in the area. Its purpose was to persuade readers of the dangers associated with drinking and driving. it stated Ohio’s laws and penalties if convicted of driving while intoxicated and listed what it takes for various people to become intoxicated.

It seems that almost daily we are hearing of new organizations being founded to combat the sin of alcoholism and the harm that drunks do to innocent people. Radio and television public service announcements try to alert people to the dangers of this serious national problem. It seems to me that it might help if churches would address this matter and speak out against those who engage in this senselessness. For some reason, I doubt that most religious organizations will join the campaign against drunkenness. They promote too many activities within their churches where alcohol is served (often for profit) to ever speak out against it.
