In the Beginning God

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Gen. 1:1). So opens the most popular book in the world. The first verse also opens the book of Genesis, the record of man’s beginnings. One might think that such a book would open with a reasoned defense of why man should believe in God. It does not. Rather, it assumes the existence of God and begins with an account of creation. The creation narrative cannot be separated from the Bible without undermining its foundation. Rejecting the creation narrative would undermine the following doctrines: • A belief in God as the Creator. Derivatives of the word “create” occur 106 times in the Bible (create — 54; creation — 6; Creator — 5; creature — 41). God’s authority over man is tied to his being man’s creator. John said, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev. 4:11). • The divine origin of the soul of man. Not only does man have a soul, but he also possesses free will — a will that can be subjected to the Devil’s temptations and choose to obey or disobey God. • The origin of sin. The book of Genesis reveals to us what sin is and what are its consequences. • The role of man and woman. Paul ties the headship of man to the order of God’s creating male and female (1 Tim. 2:13-14). • The institution of marriage. Jesus related God’s original plan for husband and wife to have a lifelong commitment to each other to creation (Matt. 19:1-12). • The scheme of redemption is tied to the creation narrative of Genesis 1-3. The role of the serpent, the great tempter of man, is revealed in this account. The origin of sin and what its consequences are for mankind are revealed in this narrative. Man’s hopelessness because of his sin reveals man’s need for a Savior who is the “seed of woman” and who crushes the head of that serpent (Gen. 3:15). This interpretation of Genesis 3:15 is confirmed by Romans 16:20 — “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly” (Rom. 16:20). • The week as a division of ordered time is derived from the creation week. This list could probably be much extended, but this suffices to establish this point: Genesis lays the foundation on which the whole Bible and God’s work of human redemption is built. If one starts tampering with this foundation, he undermines the whole scheme of human redemption. Under a different metaphor, the story of human redemption is a garment woven from one thread. If one unravels a single thread of that garment, he unravels it all! The book of Genesis is one of the most important books in the Bible because it forms the basis of all revelation. It is necessary to account for the moral condition of man and his consequent need of redemption by Christ. The book of Genesis is the root whose trunk extends through all Scripture. Therefore, one must treat with utmost seriousness any attacks on the creation narrative.

Man’s Leadership in the Home

Ron Halbrook
West Columbia, Texas

Introduction

1 . Man's leadership in every aspect of home life depends first and foremost on his spiritual attitude, condition, and role.

2. If we succeed in other ways but fail in spiritual leadership, we fail in our most serious responsibility.

3. If we do not attain all the material, physical, and carnal goals we have in life, but succeed in the spiritual leadership of our family, we are a success rather than a failure in God's sight.

Honor To Whom Honor Is Due: Honor To Women, Wives, And Mothers

Ron Halbrook
West Columbia, Texas

Women, wives, and mothers are to be honored as the special creation of God. When God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion. . .," he was not talking about the male only. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (Gen. 1:26-27). Male-and female reflect the image of God Himself, not a fleshly image but a spiritual image. That image includes a spirit that never ceases to exist and which reflects free moral agency, initiative, and forethought. It includes both intellect and emotion.

Man without the woman has no suitable helper and no adequate companion in all the universe. Women, wives, and mothers are to be honored as a special blessing to man. She was made from man's rib by a miracle of God-and like man's rib, she is to be at his side, not under his feet or over his head. Man is to make a unique place in his heart and life for his wife: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Gen. 2:18-24). The man who breaks these promises to make his wife first, to keep himself to her alone, and to blend his life with hers is himself a dishonor to all that is holy and good. He is to seek her well being and to share every blessing he has with her. He is to protect her and provide her every need. In blessing her, he blesses himself, for she is an honor to him! She can enlarge and enhance everything about him, for good or for bad.

The Equality Of Women

Dick Blackford

Why should the question of the equality of women ever arise? Be-cause some have misinterpreted the fact that the Scriptures give men and women different roles to mean that women are inferior. Men are in authority and women are in subjection. Some of the people who do this are men and may have wrong motives in wanting to "keep women inferior." And some are women who are feminists who want to discredit the Bible and so have misrepresented it.

It needs to be established here at the first that we are talking about equality in the sight of God. That is really all that matters.

The Role of Women As Revealed In the Old Testament

Mike Willis

The influence of the feminist movement has caused many Christians to become confused about the respective roles of men and women in every relationship of a society: business, politics, family, church, etc. Constantly we are being bombarded with feminist role models that have little resemblance to what is revealed in the Bible or even to the society we knew as children. We face the temptation of being conformed to this world with respect to the role of women.

For the past 40 years, women have been subjected to a methodical assault that redefines their roles in society. They have been taught that one cannot find self-fulfillment in her role as wife and mother. To reach full human potential, a woman should enter the labor force. She should have no regrets for placing her children in state run day-care centers. Marriages need to be egalitarian, with husband and wife sharing 50-50 the decision-making responsibilities. Furthermore, women should be willing to leave repressive marriages that interfere with reaching their full potential in order to find self-fulfillment. As this feminist movement has gained momentum in our country, it has achieved significant social status and political clout. Feminists have advisory personnel who go over the textbooks that our children use in school to be sure that feminist role models are displayed. They influence the appointment of justices on the Supreme Court. In a word, the feminist movement has significant political clout that is influencing us in ways of which we may not be aware. Our wives and girls are affected by the feminist movement.
