Failing Short of God”s Grace

Looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled (Heb. 12:15).

We have studied quite a bit lately about the grace of God and the fact that no one can merit salvation. We can only be saved because God loved us and through his grace provided a way for our justification. We are saved by grace (Eph. 2:8-9); we stand in grace (Rom. 5:2); we have our daily forgiveness through going to his throne of grace (Heb. 4:14-16). When we get to heaven, we can truly sing, "Amazing Grace" and "Wonderful Grace of Jesus." How precious is that grace which God has so richly "lavished upon us" (Eph. 1:7-8).

But the Hebrew writer gives to each of us a very solemn warning: "Be careful lest you fall short of the grace of God." Therefore, it is possible for us to "miss out on" God's grace. The writer said that it is! Paul also said that it is possible for us to "nullify the grace of God" (Gal. 2:21) and that we can "fall from grace" (Gal. 5:4). Let us never feel that since God loves us and that his grace has forgiven us of our every sin, gross as they may have been, it is still possible for us to "fall short of that grace." How could we do so?

Don’t Leave the Other Undone

Ollie Duffield

Joliet, 111.

For many years denominationalists have criticized gospel preachers for teaching the essentiality of obedience to the commands of Christ, and in the last few years a few who profess to be members of the church have leveled a charge of "legalism" and "Pharisaism" from the same standpoint. That it is quite possible for a gospel preacher to be guilty of Pharisaic spirit is admitted by all, but the things which makes one so is not teaching and insisting upon strict adherence to Jesus' teaching. Jesus did not cast reflection upon obedience. In Matthew 23:23, 24, Jesus said, "Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone. Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel." Notice that Jesus tells them they ought not, to have left what they did undone. It was good for them to be attentive to the smallest things of obedience as well as to the weightier matters of the law.

Forgiveness And Forgetting

By Frank Jamerson

Many Christians have a problem with forgiveness and forgetting. They ask God’s forgiveness, but still feel that because of their remembering the sin, they may not have been forgiven. Sometimes, those who obey the Lord in baptism continue to remember their past sins and wonder whether God has truly forgiven them.

There is a difference between being forgiven and forgetting. Saul of Tarsus was forgiven of his sins when he was baptized “to wash away” his sins (Acts 22:16), but he remembered his past sins when he wrote Timothy (1 Tim. 1:13-15). In the Old Testament we read of David being forgiven, yet he remembered his past sins. Nathan said, “God hath put away thy sin” (2 Sam. 12:13), but years later David wrote about his past sins (Psa. 32:1-5). The apostle Peter was pricked in the heart by the crowing of a rooster (Lk. 22:61,62), and obviously repented of his sin. His life afterward shows clearly that he was aware of God’s forgiveness, but no doubt the sound of a rooster crowing sent pains through his heart for a long time after that event.
