Stand Up

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

When the men or elders of a church openly invite false teachers into the assembly of the Lords people to preach or teach the congregation must stand up and say we will have no part in such activity. The warning was given by not just the apostles but the Lord Himself. Mat_7:15  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Paul gave much the same warning in Act 20:28-30  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Act 20:29  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Act 20:30  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Apathy

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

I can't count the times people have said "Oh, we love or church we have such a good preacher and good teachers of course we follow all the acts of worship and we even find a few days in the fall for a Gospel meeting and wow what good speakers we invite to come. We are so happy where we are." That is when I ask some simple questions, How many members are there in your assembly? How many were Baptized for the remission of their sins at last count? Are most of those who visit from other congregations or are they coming in from the community to hear Gods word? Lastly, do a lot of folks come to these Gospel meets you find a day or two for?

Most will say, Oh, we are just a small group maybe 15 or 20 on a good Sunday. There hasn't been many if any others Baptized in a while. Oh, and yes our visitors are all Christians maybe traveling or from closer congregations who want to visit. Our Gospel meeting sometimes range in the 30 people a night counting us and they are from other churches in the area.

Attitudes Leading To Apostasy

Irven Lee
Toney, Alabama

Israel was oppressed by armies of idolaters again and again because God gave them up to be punished after they rebelled against His law and copied the idolatrous world about them. The Lord would deliver them when they repented and prayed for help. The apostasy did not begin the day the invading and conquering army marched across the land killing and enslaving. Attitudes that led to their downfall no doubt developed gradually over a period of time.

In a private conversation in the late 1930s in the Gospel Advocate office, R.L. Whiteside told me that institutionalism would be the occasion of the next great apostasy. I did not know him very well and did not recognize the wisdom in his remark. I thought our fathers before us had gone through that and had put that behind us. In my ignorance I overlooked the fact that the devil uses the same tricks over and over again with only a little change in names and points of attack. Hundreds of thousands of my brethren were as blind as I was so there was not the proper teaching to immunize against the central agencies' taking money from churches and exercising control over them.

Correction

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

It has been my experience that most people when you try to correct someone that eventually you end up hearing how unloving you are and how mean it is for you to point out their error. It seems no matter what tone you take with folks you always end up being the so-called bad guy. You try and try and you give them book, chapter and verse and yet you are the legalist the anti and many other names in their book.

They do not stop to think even the apostles corrected one another. Just read what Paul said about and to Peter, Gal 2:11  But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
Gal 2:12  For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
Gal 2:13  And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
Gal 2:14  But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

Hereditary Total Depravity Pervades Denominationalism

By Phil Roberts

Throughout history man has sought to shift the blame for his sins onto someone else’s shoulders. The ancient Babylonians spoke of man being created out of the blood of a rebel god named Kingu. Naturally such a race could not help being rebellious itself. Even before the coming of Christ the Jews were speaking of the yetser ha ra, or “evil inclination” with which all men were born. It should not be surprising, therefore, to find that people professing Christianity have behaved pretty much like all other men in this respect. In the history of “Christian theology” this tendency has manifested itself in the development of the intertwined doctrines of original sin and hereditary total depravity. The doctrine of original sin affirms that all descendants of Adam inherit both the guilt and the consequences of his sin. The doctrine of hereditary total depravity follows with the declaration that all such descendants of Adam are so completely corrupted and depraved by it that they cannot, of their own free will, do any truly good work. They cannot, of their own free will, even turn to God.
