The Faith Of Abraham

Mike Willis
Bowling Green, Kentucky

Abraham is described as the "father of all them that believe" (Rom. 4:11). Paul admonished all men to "walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham" (Rom. 4:12). Let us examine the nature of the faith of Abraham.

A Faith Of Trusting Obedience

The Lord called Abraham to leave his kindred saying, "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee" (Gen. 12:1). The Scriptures record, "So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him" (Gen. 12:4).

Faith Or Opinion?

Roy E. Cogdill

We have been writing about unity among those who believe in Christ through the words of the Apostles (The Gospel). Christ prayed that these might all be one even as He and the Father are one! (John 17:20-21) We believe that this unity is possible where the Word of God is respected and where people have the right attitude toward one another. We further believe that a diligent effort in behalf of such unity, its existence and its preservation, is the individual duty of every Christian. Paul said by the Spirit, "Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." (Eph. 4:3) Again Paul exhorted, "If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." (Phil. 2:1-4) These exhortations are not easily followed but they are essential to the right attitude and to the bond of peace in which the unity of the Spirit must be kept. We need to honestly examine our hearts and our practice to see if we are really making a contribution, a positive effort in the direction of maintaining the peace and unity for which Christ prayed and for which we are all obligated.

The Power Producing Faith

Cecil Willis
Marion, Indiana

Today the religious world has so mystified salvation that one hardly knows what to expect when he is saved. They tell us that first of all the Holy Spirit must descend upon one and operate directly upon his heart, and by this operation faith is produced. One must pray until God decides to send the Holy Spirit unto him; and until God decides to give him the Holy Spirit, it is impossible for him to be saved. But one might inquire, "What is the direct operation of the Holy Spirit?" There is not one person who claims to have received the Holy Spirit who can give a definition of what he has received that is agreeable to others who claim to have received the same thing.

If the reader does not think this is true, then sometime, when one of your friends tells you that he has gotten the Holy Spirit, question him about it. The only thing that he can tell you about it is that it is wonderful to have Him. This so-called operation of God is always clothed in a veil of mystery. The reception of the Spirit occurs in some odd way, and under strange circumstances. Those who try to explain what they supposedly have received use three or four nebulous, abstract phrases, and then proclaim that you cannot understand it for you have not received the Holy Spirit. As someone crudely put it: "It is better felt than telt!"

The Order of Faith & Repentance

Jimmy Tuten, Jr.
Charleston Heights, South Carolina

The position that one is saved by faith only is very prevalent in some religious circles. One religious group maintains that justification is "solely through faith in Christ" while another group goes so far as to say salvation by faith only is "a most wholesome doctrine." Those who advocate this find themselves in a dilemma, for they know that such passages as Acts 17:30; Luke 13:3, -etc., teach that one must repent before one is saved They recognize the consequence of their "salvation by faith only" position, i.e., if one is saved the moment he believes, he would be saved without repentance. In order to escape this consequence, the order of faith and repentance is reversed. It is argued that one must repent before he believes. It is argued, therefore, that the order is repentance then faith.

Salvation by Grace Faith and Works

Men have taught many false doctrines concerning salvation. Men have been in error on what one must do to be saved. When is one saved has been misunderstood. How one is saved is a question men will not let the Bible settle.

The New Testament teaches man is saved by (1) grace, (2) faith, and (3) works. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." (Eph. 2:8-9) A study of the relationship of grace, faith and works is needed because the denominational world has never understood the proper relationship of the three.

Man Is Saved By God's Grace

The Bible in a number of passages teaches men are saved by God's grace. (Titus 2:11-12; 3:7; Eph. 1:7; 2:79; Jno. 3:16; Rom. 3:24; 5:20-21; 6:14). Briefly defined "grace" is the "unmerited favor" of God extended to man. If God did not extend man his grace, man could not be saved. A convict could not be pardoned unless the governor was willing to extend his grace to him.
