Darwinism and Morality

[Note: This MS is available in larger font on our New Uploads page.]

Until about fifty years ago in America, lasciviousness, adultery, and fornication were almost universally deemed reprehensible. Divorce was shameful, pornography was underground, and homosexuality was illegal. These elements are now on open display and enjoy wide approval—and participation.

Is our nation stronger or weaker because of these changes? Are families/homes more or less secure? Is the “misery index” for individuals greater or less? Do more or fewer people turn to chemical “solutions” for failure to find “purpose” in life? Are we experiencing more or fewer individual murders by abortion and mass murders? To ask is to answer.

Many “whys” might be suggested to explain the unarguable decline in national morals and ethics. Arguably, they all go back to a single taproot: Charles Darwin and his evolutionary hoax. Before his theories caught on in the 1870s, Western nations, though divided between Protestant and Catholic, were united in accepting the Biblical view of man as the apex of the creation of the Almighty, Self-existent God. Man had a purpose—to glorify God—and the Bible set forth man’s behavior that would do so.

Abortion—A Continuing Abomination

[Note: This MS is available in larger font on our Brief Articles page.]

Introduction

The Pharaoh of Moses' time ordered that every male Hebrew was to be slain at birth (Exo. 1:16, 22). He is remembered in Scripture (and by all right-thinking men) as an unspeakably cruel, immoral, and evil man (Acts 7:19). The ancient Greek pagans “exposed” their unwanted and helpless infants to wild animals and the elements to dispose of them, and most moderns call their behavior “barbaric” and “inhumane.” Herod the Great murdered all of the male infants living in and around Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth (Mat. 2:16). Even the irreligious justly recoil at his jealous blood thirst.

 Mass Murderers in Modern Times

History remembers Adolf Hitler as a homicidal maniac on a grand scale for his destruction of 6,000,000 Jews in the Holocaust of the 1930s and 1940s. Josef Stalin is said to have murdered far more than this number of his own people. Chairman Mao slaughtered even more than Stalin. However, even Hitler, Stalin, and Mao were small time operators beside the perpetrators and advocates of legalized, casual abortion in our “civilized” nation. In the forty-five years since the heinous decision of the Supreme Court was handed down (Roe v. Wade, January 22, 1973), almost 61,000,000 totally innocent, indefensible, babies have been murdered—either in the womb or in the process of being born—by abortion (http://www.numberofabortions.com/).

The Church—Its Uniqueness, Distinctiveness, and “Exceptionalism”

[Note: This MS is available in larger font on our Long Articles page.]

Introduction

While fighting a war against terrorism that seeks to destroy our nation from without, it is also in the throes of a crucial civil war. This war is not (at least not yet) being fought with the hardware of physical combat. It is a philosophical and ideological engagement; its weapons are ideas and words. The assaults are aimed at the very heart of that which constitutes the United States of America—that which makes our nation unique. Some call it a “culture war,” and this may be a good term for it. The Random House College Dictionary defines culture in its sociological application as “the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another.”

AMERICA’S MORAL DECAY

Fifty years ago, lasciviousness, adultery, and fornication, were almost universally deemed reprehensible; they hardly raise an eyebrow anymore. New York Governor, Eliot Spitzer, was forced to resign in 2008 for patronizing prostitutes. CNN rewarded him with a TV contract in 2010. New York congressman, Anthony Weiner, was forced to resign his seat in June 2011. He initially denied his involvement in a “sexting” scandal, but then admitted his guilt. His fellow Democrats appeared more incensed that he was caught in a lie than that he was involved in moral turpitude.

Millions of couples “live together” without marriage, often producing children. Sexual “freedom” dominates the entertainment industry. Readily available pornography is a multi-billion dollar business annually. America seems obsessed with flaunting what was once the most personal, private, and intimate relationship possible between a man and a woman.

The 1960s “sexual revolution” occurred long enough ago for us to observe some causes and effects. Consider some factors behind the abandonment of previous national moral standards:

THE CHURCH—ITS UNITY AND UNDENOMINATIONAL CHARACTER

Introduction

From his earliest knowledge that God planned the church, Satan has despised the very concept of it and everything pertaining to it. His first plan of attack was to do all that he could to prevent its establishment. He used the monstrous, murderous Herod the Great, in an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the infant Christ in Bethlehem. He personally and powerfully tempted the Lord to abandon His Heavenly mission as He prepared to launch his work of preaching, teaching, and miracle-working. The devil employed the Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, scribes, and lawyers to oppose, try, and tempt the Lord relentlessly during His work on earth. He used one of Jesus’ apostles to betray Him to His enemies and another of His most intimate apostles to deny that he even knew Him.

Satan worked relentlessly through the Jewish leaders in his trials and in inciting the mob to demand His death. Pilate bowed to will of the prince of all evil in releasing a murderer and delivering the Lord to the cross. Beelzebub thereby employed his mightiest weapon—death—in an effort to thwart the kingdom plans of the Father and His Son. However, as Jesus plainly prophesied, even death itself, “the gates of Hades,” could not prevail—Christ built His church just as He had promised (Mat. 16:18). Since the establishment of the church, God’s faithful people in it have been a holy nation under siege by an axis of evil forces consisting of atheism, humanism, paganism, hedonism, and denominationalism, all dancing as puppets on Satan’s strings. He will not cease his opposition to the God-beloved and blood-bought church of Christ until he is finally cast into the lake of fire and brimstone and confined there forever as his just due (Rev. 20:10).
