The beam

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

Mat 7:13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Mat 7:14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

I do not believe it can be stated any clearer than the very words of our Lord that there will be few that find the straight way. Finding the straight way is easy enough, staying on it is another.

I have sat and watched children trying to walk on a narrow beam of wood and noticed many times it is easier for the smaller ones to walk the beam without losing their balance than the taller ones. Science will tell you it is because the smaller child has a lower center of gravity thus making it easier for them walk the length of the beam. Taller children can learn to balance their bodies by holding out their arms and leaning first one way and then the other and with much practice they learn to walk the beam with confidence. At the same time I have watched some children try many times without success and they become discouraged and simply walk away defeated. Needless to say there are many other factors also that play a part in their ability to walk the beam but I believe there are two that stand out. One is balance the other is a willingness not to give up or accept defeat.

Moving away from God?

By: Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

I did not grow up in the Lords church, in fact I was 24 years old before I even understood what the church was. It has now been some 30 years since I was added to the church by the Lord upon my obedience to the Gospel. Over those years I have seen many changes. I have seen churches fall into apostasy and split congregations. I have seen men who I believed to be sound preachers become complete heretics and I have watched as so many went off seeking what they believed to be right above what God says is right. Pro_16:25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. This scripture is just as valid today as the day it was written. Yet, there are many who still want to try and improve on what God has stated His will is for man.

Where do you stand?

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

Where do I stand? This should be the question on every Christians mind to day and every day. Every person is know by their fruit are they not? When one calls themselves a Christian we start looking for the fruit that person bares and the first thing we can look for is do they/we stand on Gods word. I can claim to be anything but what I truly am will be seen by all in my actions, my speech, my adherence t5o the truth.

First we know that if one has not followed the Gospel and been baptized for the remission of sin then that person no matter what they say is not a Christian. We know Christ at the point of baptism ads man to the church and thus one becomes a Christian at that point too.

Not my will…..

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

Since the founding of the church in the first century those who believe in God and His commands have been persecuted. It should really come as no surprise that this continues today. All down through history nations have risen and fallen because of sin and lack of love for God and His word. These facts can not be denied. We face the same thing that all other Christians have faced down through the years.

Hosea put it aptly when he recorded in Hos_4:6  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Stand Up

By Jim Miller
Gray, Maine

When the men or elders of a church openly invite false teachers into the assembly of the Lords people to preach or teach the congregation must stand up and say we will have no part in such activity. The warning was given by not just the apostles but the Lord Himself. Mat_7:15  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Paul gave much the same warning in Act 20:28-30  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Act 20:29  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Act 20:30  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
